Dear Parents and Students,

We hope that your families have enjoyed the summer break! The returning staff and I look forward to welcoming our students to a fantastic 2018-19 year at Hugh Boyd Secondary School. Hugh Boyd has the reputation of being a tremendously successful school due to its dedicated students, supportive parents, and hard-working staff. 

September is coming up quickly and it promises to be a great new beginning whether it’s the first exciting year of secondary school, the comfortable middle years, or the final graduation year for your child.

In May 2013, Hugh Boyd received full authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme school and successfully completed its first evaluation with IB in April 2018. Although MYP will mostly affect the Grade 8, 9 and 10 students, all students will be introduced to the IB Learner Profile, International Mindedness, and will benefit from the cross-curricular planning.

Success in school requires an ongoing and supportive relationship between the student, the home, and the school. We will do all we can to support your student in their learning. However, as you know, it is important for parents/guardians to stay actively involved in their teen’s education during high school. Parents are urged to stay connected to the school by checking the calendar, website, attending information nights or perhaps they will consider joining our PAC or Dry After Grad groups. New for this year is an agenda app for smartphones called My School Day that will be accessible to all students and parents to facilitate communication between our school and your family.  Information about this app will be shared on the school website by the first day of class.

Also new for this year is our move towards the School Cash Online system. Elementary schools in the district have been using this system for the last two years with great success. School Cash Online registration information is included with this letter. Please register your child(ren) using their student number (see SCO info) before the start of school in September. The student fee of $28.00, which covers the cost of a student agenda (online through My School Day app or hard copy), student council activities, communications, and awards, will be available for payment September 4 - 28, 2018.

Be sure that you provide a current email address on the BC Student Information Verification Form (blue sheet) that is attached to this letter.

Please note: If your son/daughter will be absent during the first week of school but intends to return to Boyd, it is vital that the school be informed as soon as possible.  This will allow us to organize classes accurately and also to ensure that all absent students have timetables and lockers when they arrive.

Homeroom lists will be posted Friday, August 31, by 4 pm on the main doors (facing Francis Road) just beside the Community Centre. Students should check these lists to find their homeroom number and location.  The homeroom times for Tuesday, September 4 are as follows:

Grade 8                                   9 – 10:30 am

Grade 9 and 10                       11 am – noon

Grades 11 and 12                    1 – 2 pm

FIRST DAY:  Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Short day – Only 1 hour

On Tuesday, we ease students back to school with a homeroom class. The Grade 8 students will be staying longer (90 minutes), as they will have a chance to find their lockers, practice opening their locks, and find their classrooms.  During homeroom, students will receive their timetables that show their scheduled classes, teachers, and room locations. Students should bring a pen, paper and enthusiasm; a lunch isn’t necessary on the first day since students will only be here a short while.

Wednesday, September 5, 2018 - Homeroom and Introduction to Day One Classes

School finishes early

The day begins at 8:15 am with the warning bell.  This is a “Team Time” day and we will finish at 12:49 pm. After a short homeroom period, students will follow their Day 1 schedules and attend Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 classes.  As well as providing an introduction to their classes, teachers will also let students know about any specific school supplies. 

Thursday, September 6, 2018 - Homeroom and Introduction to Day Two Classes

School finishes early

The day begins at 8:15 am with the warning bell.  This is a “Collaboration Time” day and we will finish at 12:49 pm as there will be in-service for teachers following the early release. This is the only Collaboration Time that has an early release; others during the school year will have a later start to the day. After a short homeroom period, students will follow their Day 2 schedules and attend Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 classes. As well as providing an introduction to their classes, teachers will also let students know about any specific school supplies. 

Friday, September 7, 2018

Regular school hours – 8:20 am to 2:44 pm

A short homeroom, then Day 1 Classes. We will be having Grade Assemblies during the day for all grades that will be approximately 15-20 minutes in length.

In addition to the school agenda app, the school calendar provided on the first day in homeroom lists important events such as our upcoming Photo Dayand Meet the Teacher Night. The calendar also lists professional days, report card dates, and early dismissal days. Our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings are also listed. The PAC invites all parents to come out to their first meeting on October 11th. PAC meetings are held in the school’s library. They welcome all and especially new members who are interested in attending. 

Please note that the school calendar is also posted on the Hugh Boyd website.  We will be encouraging families to utilize the agenda app and visit the website regularly (http://boyd.sd38.bc.cafor monthly newsletters, graduation information and other current updates.  The agenda app and website will have the most up to date information, particularly if there are changes to any events on the school calendar.

We are attaching to this letter the BC Student Information Verification form for your child.  Please check and revise the information if necessary, sign and return to the school at your earliest convenience. In the first week of school, be sure to check all the documents being sent home with your child as some of those include permission forms that must be read and signed by a parent.  We thank you in advance for your cooperation.


As we prepare for our Grade 8 Activity Day on Tuesday, September 18th, please email the school – with the full name of your child and his/her t-shirt size (S, M, L, or XL) in the subject heading by Wednesday, September 5.
