IB Middle Years Programme
Welcome to the MYP at Hugh Boyd Secondary!
Hugh Boyd Secondary School is an International Baccalaureate World school for the Middle Years Programme. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Hugh Boyd Secondary School believes is important for our students.
The staff of Hugh Boyd worked diligently to incorporate the MYP model of teaching and learning into our curriculum and instruction after a period of learning, collaboration and instruction to learn the many benefits of the IB Programme. In 2011 we received this news:
“We are pleased to inform you that the application for candidacy for the Middle Years Programme at Hugh Boyd Secondary School has been accepted. Hugh Boyd Secondary School is recognized as an IB candidate school for the Middle Years Programme as of 1 September, 2011.”
In 2013 we officially became an IB School. We’ve been working hard to continuously improve ever since. Boyd teachers have worked diligently to incorporate the IB Middle Years Programme into our junior classes. As an IB candidate school, we strive to have our students develop the qualities of the IB Learner Profile, identified as: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective. We focus on developing a well-rounded learner profile to help students approach the challenges and opportunities in their lives at a local, national and global levels. Many of these aspects can help students develop a degree of international mindedness.
Over the years school staff have incorporated the fundamental concept of international-mindedness in our school through school-wide activities and individual units and lessons. In some cases, students can translate this learning and these events into service learning and action hours. We are a “Interact” school and the students’ over the years have participated in campaigns to eliminate Polio and support a community projext in Refilwe, South Africa. In addition to this we have sponsored trips abroad and have been a part of a long, ongoing exchange programme with a sister school in Jonai, Japan.
To further this, teachers meet during collaboration time and professional development days to align curriculum and plan cross-curricular units to meet the requirements of the BC curriculum, to teach to the expectations of IB MYP, and to enrich our students’ understanding of their world. This means that some units and interdisciplinary units are designed expressly to allow students to connect their learning to a broader picture of the world, consistently, across a subject or between subjects.
Ultimately, the aim of the MYP program at Hugh Boyd Secondary is to develop internationally minded people who recognize their common humanity, their shared guardianship of the planet, and their responsibility to help to create a better and more peaceful world.
