Activating Student Voice
- One of the initiatives our school has taken on with an Assessment and Innovation grant was to plug into student voice (one of the School District Strategic Plan goals).
- Art teacher Amy Moss has called upon some students to create and paint a wall mural that embraces what our students think matters in our community. Titled "Together we Thrive" the mural was designed, created and painted on the walls in our Multipurpose area (a high-traffic area where mosts of our students spend lunch time).
- From the student-artists who created the mural (Chloe Ray, Ryan Monaghan, Livia Nowak, Lauren Bisaillon and Cora Fallman):
- This mural was created with themes of diversity in mind. While it’s not possible to represent every community in the world or at Hugh Boyd, we wanted to give every individual pictured on the mural a diverse identity, because in real life, everybody is different and holds different identities. To build personal engagement with the project, we gave the depicted characters names while we were painting. From left to right, the characters are named Habiba, Sun Hee, Kyle, Leith, Brianne, and Damien. These characters reflect cultural, ethnic, religious, and ability-level diversity. The most important thing about the mural is the fact that all six characters are shown together, having fun. Above them are the words ‘together we thrive’, a statement that is true now more than ever. Everybody is different, and it is these differences that give us strength as a community.
Kudos to the students who created the artwork and the message of diversity and inclusion that represents so much of what Hugh Boyd stands for. Thank you!
