Truth & Reconciliation Lesson-June 21

  1. On Wednesday, June 21st, National Indigenous Peoples Day across Canada, several Hugh Boyd staff prepared a voluntary lesson for classes to participate in. The focus was to walk through the book 21 Things you may not know about the Indian Act by Bob Joseph.
  2.
  3. Below is the lesson plan shared with staff and teachers led their classes through these activities before the students came and posted their reflections on the window outside the library.  Our students then took turns reading each other’s reflections.  It was a very impactful and moving exercise for our students.

The lesson allowed for staff and students to consider many of the impacts of the Indian Act and by asking students to reflect on how treatment of people could be felt in today's world.  It was a truly engaging and thought-provoking exercise for all of the students and staff who were able to participate.  Below you will see some photographs of the similes the students came up with. We will look to continue on this theme next year.
