Grade 8 Class Profile

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

During monthly department meetings, each curricular area has been brainstorming and sharing literacy strengths and stretches for grade 8 classes.  This has allowed us to create a Class Profile based on all grade 8 students.

The literacy leader has also been sharing her literacy work with the leaders of the school.   She shared about the Grade 8 Reading for Information Performance Based Assessment (PBA), explained the process of evaluating student samples, and shared the results from the grade 8 cohort.

The Class Profile information and the PBA have allowed us to have a better understanding of our grade 8s as a whole.

What gap or problem do these actions aim to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? As a community, we are trying to get a clearer picture of the literacy strengths and stretches of our grade 8 students as a whole.  By discussing and sharing the PBA and it’s results as a community, we can better support literacy strategies across the curriculum.  We want students deepen their literacy skills in individual classes, and also transfer literacy strategies across the curriculum.
Based on quantitative and qualitative data (including feedback from scanning), how effectively has this strategy addressed the identified gap or problem? The discussions with department leaders have been rich.  As a school, we have collected anecdotal information, and PBA data to inform us about the profile of our students this Fall.  The majority of our students fall into the Developing Proficiency category.  The literacy leader has been able to work with classroom teachers across the curriculum to provide targeted instruction to many grade 8 classes. However, students are still struggling to transfer skills from one subject area to the next.
How will we move forward accordingly? What adjustments do we need to make if we have or have not achieved our goals?Moving forward, the literacy leader will continue to work with classroom teachers to provide targeted literacy instruction specifically targeting infographics.   The same or similar strategies are being used in different subject areas of grade 8 classrooms so that students can see that literacy strategies are transferrable from one subject area to the next.
