Collaborating to Build Literacy Strategies

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

Since the Fall, the literacy leader has been co-planning and co-teaching with Grade 8 teachers to provide direction instruction on:

  • Vocabulary
  • Interpreting visuals
  • Using text features
  • Identifying Main Ideas
  • Reading different data types
  • Making Inferences
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

Students are building their literacy toolkit so that they can use strategies to help with identifying main ideas and supporting ideas, making meaning and interpreting visuals in text.  Learning is scaffolding and students are learning to choose appropriate strategies independently in different contexts. Similar strategies are taught in different content areas to help students understand that literacy tools can be used across the curriculum.
