A Spring Follow Up on Reading

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

Describe the actions adults are taking to make a difference for learners connected to the school focus

Similar to the Fall, in the Spring, a Reading for Information Performance Based Assessment (PBA) was completed to compare progress of students between the Fall and Spring.

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

Examples should describe:

  • Who?
  • Doing what?
  • How often?
  • Producing what evidence?

The literacy leader administered the Grade 8 PBA was completed with grade 8 students.  Here is what we noticed:

  • Over 70% of students are consistently able to identify main ideas and supporting details in using different text.
  • Over 50% of students are able identify to consistently use text features to help interpret text.
  • Approximately 40% of students are able to reflect on their own literacy skills

Based on these results, teachers continued to provide targeted reading instruction, but they also increased opportunities for students to reflect and think about their reading skills and comprehension.  Teachers continued to emphasize before reading, during reading and after reading strategies to help students think about their reading skills.   Next steps will include student goal setting about their reading skills and comprehension.
